Aspiring to start a family is an exciting time, but sometimes, the journey to conception can prove to be difficult. Fortunately, there is a range of fertility treatments available, such as IVF, IUI, ICSI and surrogacy. But before delving into these treatments, it’s crucial to have a better understanding of ovulation, which is a fundamental part of the fertility process.

Ovulation is the time when an egg is released from one of the ovaries and travels through the fallopian tube, ready to be fertilised by sperm. For many women, ovulation occurs around day 14 of a 28-day menstrual cycle, but this can differ from person to person. Factors such as stress, weight changes, and other health issues can impact ovulation.

As an ovulation specialist, I have seen many cases where women have improved their chances of conceiving by adopting healthy habits that promote ovulation. Here are some do’s and don’ts that can help enhance the ovulation process:

Do’s:

1. Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight or underweight can impact ovulation negatively. Try to maintain a healthy BMI by following a balanced diet and regular exercise routine.

2. Follow a healthy diet: Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can improve ovulation. Specific foods that are helpful include spinach, blueberries, salmon, eggs, and nuts.

3. Start tracking your ovulation: There are many easy-to-use ovulation tracking kits available to help women determine the best time to conceive.

4. Get enough sleep and manage stress: Stress can impede ovulation, so make sure to take time for self-care and relaxation, like getting enough sleep and incorporating mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation.

5. Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water can promote healthy cervical mucus and improve the chances of conception.

Don’ts:

1. Don’t smoke and limit alcohol: Smoking and excessive drinking can negatively impact ovulation and drastically lower the chances of conception.

2. Don’t over-exercise: While exercise is essential to overall health, excessive weight training or running can delay ovulation in some women.

3. Avoid processed foods: Foods that are high in sugar and unhealthy fats can contribute to hormonal imbalances that negatively impact ovulation.

4. Don’t neglect your oral health: Gum disease can result in inflammation and negatively impact ovulation, so keeping up with dental check-ups and brushing and flossing regularly is essential.

In addition to adopting healthy lifestyle habits, there are also several fertility treatments available. These include in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and surrogacy, among others.

IVF involves fertilizing the egg and sperm outside of the body in a laboratory and then transferring the embryo back into the uterus.

IUI, on the other hand, involves injecting washed, concentrated sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation.

ICSI is similar to IVF, but in this treatment, a single sperm is injected into the egg directly.

Surrogacy is an option for couples or individuals who are unable to carry a child themselves. In this process, an embryo created through IVF is implanted into the uterus of a surrogate who carries the pregnancy to term.

In conclusion, as an ovulation specialist, I encourage women to adopt healthy habits that promote ovulation. Beyond that, there are several fertility treatments available, depending on individual needs and situations. By working with a specialist and developing a tailored plan, many couples can successfully conceive and finally start on their path toward parenthood.
